The Course Top runners from around the world will enjoy crisp, cool running weather in a setting that surrounds them with snow-capped peaks contrasting with spring blossoms, all along a flat and slightly downhill 26.2 mile course.
The Salt Lake City Marathon starts at the Olympic Legacy Bridge on the campus of the University of Utah, the site of the 2002 Winter Olympic & Paralympic Athlete's Village. The gentle course then skirts through the municipalities of Holladay, Murray, South Salt Lake and through Salt Lake City and County. The route runs around the base of the towering Wasatch Mountains, passes by cozy neighborhoods and elegant estates and winds through Salt Lake's legendary wide streets, into the city center, via Liberty Park. Here, the music will absolutely rock, the energy will surge, and crowds of enthusiastic spectators will cheer participants on, all the way to the electric finish at the Olympic Legacy Plaza at The Gateway, in downtown Salt Lake.
Event Weekend The weekend will be filled with spectacular entertainment and parties. A fun-filled pre-event Fitness Expo and Pasta Party will keep runners psyched for the run. The Fitness Expo will take place on the Thursday and Friday preceding the race at the Salt Palace Convention Center, with exciting exhibitors and an additional day for packet pickup. Marathon participants will receive a free ticket to the Gallivan Center for an exhilarating post-race award concert and party, featuring a top national touring band (to be announced).
There will be NO race day packet pickup and packets will not be mailed! If a participant is unable to pick-up their packet and goody bag at the Quality of Life Expo, the participant may authorize someone else to pick it up for them. This person will need to present a signed note from the participant authorizing the pick-up and a copy of the participant's ID.
Start Line Location The marathon start line is located at the George S. Eccles Legacy Bridge (cross streets of Wasatch Drive and South Campus Drive) on the University of Utah Campus near the Fort Douglas TRAX station. This is approximately two miles from downtown Salt Lake City. There will be restrooms, water, medical, and gear bag drop available. There are also grassy areas on which to warm up and stretch prior to the race.
Gear Bag Drop The Gear Bag Drop will be located at the marathon start. Participants will place their gear in a bag that will be identified with their bib number. These bags will be transported to the finish line for retrieval. Please make sure that you have retrieved your bag by the official close of the finish line.
Finish Line and Festival The finish line will be filled with spirit, music and celebration. The last mile of the course is a lively Celebration Station, filled with crowds of well-wishers and more energy than you thought possible! Live bands will be performing on the entertainment stages, school cheering squads will be on hand and there will be plenty of fun diversions for participants, their families and friends.
All marathon, half marathon & 5K participants will have their timing chip removed immediately after crossing the finish line. Each marathon participant will receive a finisher medallion at the conclusion of their run. Fun interactive exhibits for adults and children, and great food and great music will all be part of the festivities to help celebrate and cheer on the athletes.
Scoring/Timing The Salt Lake City Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K has selected the ChampionChip system for the scoring and timing of both the Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K for this year's event.
ChampionChip utilizes a computerized timing system that records each runner's actual running time. Chip timing starts when participants cross the starting line mat and stops at the finish line. Your finish time is calculated precisely when you cross the finish line mat. Salt Lake City Marathon provides chip timing as a service to all our participants. Cash prizes are awarded based on gun time. Division winners are based on chip time.
Marathon Course Prohibitions Runners going backwards, animals, bicycles, baby joggers and roller skates. No wheeled vehicles are allowed other than wheelchairs and handcycles. In accordance with USATF guidelines, wheelchair and handcycle athletes must wear helmets.
